ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) Calibration
What Are Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS)?
Since the early 2000s, Automakers have been including Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) in their vehicles. Since that time, these systems have become prevalent and commonplace in a wide range of vehicles. These systems are primarily focused on collision avoidance technologies including, but not limited to, emergency breaking, back-up cameras, automated parking, variable cruise control, and lane assist / warnings.
Why Does My Advanced Driver Assistance System Need to be Calibrated?
An integral component of ADAS technology is the front windshield of your vehicle. These systems operate via sensors in the windshield in tandem with cameras, radar, LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging), and on-board computers. Because of this, it is vitally important that your Advanced Driver Assistance System is calibrated any time you have your front windshield replaced. If the windshield is “off” by even a couple of millimeters, it could throw the entire system off balance, increasing the potential for accidents.
How Does the ADAS Calibration Process Work?
The process for calibration follows four major steps:
- Pre-scan performed to ensure the camera is functioning normally
- Replacement of windshield
- Calibration – both dynamic (requires driving the vehicle) and static (using a fixed target image at a distance)
- Post-scan performed to ensure the camera is still functioning normally following the calibration
